According to the outage tracker Downdetector, more than 8,000 Indian WhatsApp users have reported the issue, with a similar situation on Instagram, which has so far recorded more than 2,000 reports.

The issues commenced at around 11:20 PM, with WhatsApp’s affected functions including various messaging, calling, updates, and communities features. Interestingly, the interruption seems not to be limited to WhatsApp and Instagram and is also being suffered across other Meta platforms, as over 23,000 online individual reports can be seen across the world cutting across Facebook and Messenger, as well. This particular outage closely follows a previous occurrence in March when Meta’s services Facebook and Instagram faced similar disruptions.

This time, the effect seems to be particularly significant, largely due to WhatsApp’s massive user base of more than 2 billion individuals worldwide. In terms of visible effects, people have reported encountering a timer on their messages indicating that messages were not delivered. The parent company of WhatsApp and Instagram, Meta, quickly posted an acknowledgement of the problem via its status page for business APIs and confirmed that other APIs connecting to Facebook Messenger and Instagram were affected, as well.

The company was also quick to assure consumers that no hacking incidence led to the failure, although the deciphered cause of the outage remains undisclosed. WhatsApp also speedily tweeted on its account X, a former Twitter platform, and reassured users that work was being done to resolve the issue. Fortunately, things got better just after 4 PM EST, and the platforms were back to normal. Outages of this magnitude are generally rare, but they are reminders that billions of users rely on these platforms for their daily interactions.
