Alia Bhatt : 2024 Met Gala
Alia Bhatt, a leading Indian actor, took everyone’s breath away at the 2024 Met Gala with her graceful presence in a custom-made sari by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The event, which occurred on May 6, 2024, in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, adopted the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” based on J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Garden of Time.”
After making her Met Gala debut last year in a Prabal Gurung gown, Alia chose to honor her home country and its rich cultural heritage. The Sabyasachi sari was a bespoke creation featuring a soft mint-green color and hand-beaded florals made from silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones. The statement 23-foot-long train emphasized the attention to detail and extraordinary craft that are synonymous with the master designer. The vision was brought to life by Alia’s stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania, who envisioned the sari’s design as a tribute to the traditional Indian sari craftsmanship and to represent the ethereal nature of Ballard’s magical garden. The garment featured ruffles, tassels, sequins, and gemstones of all kinds to add layers of whimsy to the theme.
The collaboration was especially important because it was the second time Sabyasachi’s creations graced the Met Gala red carpet. For Alia’s appearance, Sabyasachi desired to express the exhaustion of modernization and mechanization and, on the contrary, the human touch and a multitude of traditional craft methods. This was evident in the sari’s creation, which took 1,965 hours to construct and required 163 artisans, be it dyers, embroiderers, or craftsmen. Alia paired the sari with a bejeweled bralette embellished with emeralds, Basra pearls, tourmalines, and multi-colored sapphires, in a reverence of India’s rich history in jewelry-making.
Alia’s aura was exalted with shoulder-grazing earrings and a clutch of cocktail rings from Sabyasachi Accessories to carry off the ethereal, regal, and glamorous presence. By electing to wear a sari at the Met Gala, Alia not only paid accolade to her Indian origins but also showcased the opulent art of Indian textile and jewelry craftsmanship on a world stage. The sari was on-theme: modern in concept and historical in and cultural precedent, and thus, it delivered a bold trend and cultural statement.
